Bandon GAA Notes 27-09-2016

Bandon                  0. 16

Ballydesmond       1. 08

Playing at home, on a dreary wet night under lights Bandon ensured their promotion to Division 3 of the Intermediate Football League in 2017 by defeating fellow contenders Ballydesmond entirely due to a powerful second half display.

This result means that Bandon will now play Na Piarsaigh (the only team to beat us) in the Division 4 League Final.

This was a big stated objective of the team management at the beginning of the year and well done to them for achieving it with two games still left to play.

Even allowing for the conditions the visitors brought an unnecessarily nasty element to this game, which spilled over from our earlier championship meeting. Thankfully all was well controlled by the match referee who did not allow matters get completely out of hand.

The first half was abysmal fare with the sides level at 0.05 each at the break.

Many of the hardy spectators present thought at the half way point that Bandon might actually lose this game, but allowances have to be made for at least three missing regulars and coming down from the highs of winning a hard county hurling semi-final forty eight hours earlier.

Management worked the oracle at half-time and the conditions were played much better in the second half , helped by good use of substitutions . In fairness to the backs and mid-field as a unit they played very well throughout and the second- half improvement came from the forward division.

Late on, luckily nobody was seriously injured as there were a number of needless off the ball incidents..

Best on the night were Mark Sugrue who was head and shoulders above every other player on the pitch , Cian O’ Mahony, Tom O’ Donoghue and Peter Murphy.

Recently returned Mike Cahalane played very well as a second half substitute and certainly put his name in the championship hat.
