Bandon teams, Senior  Hurlers, Under 16 Hurlers and U15 Footballers won their respective championship games in the past week and our Junior Footballers then had an easy home league victory over O’Donovan Rossa on Monday evening.

Our Senior Hurlers odyssey through the 2017 championship continued un-abated at Pairc Ui Rinn last Saturday evening and we were full value for our narrow two point victory over our more fancied North Cork rivals.  In some respects this is like a repeat of 2016 where we were mostly un-fancied before most if not all of our hurling games and also a fair share of our football championship fixtures.

Our said footballers now face Castletownbere in the PIFC and the winners take on the Bantry selection.

U16

On last Friday evening our Under 16 hurlers recorded a 1-10 to 1-06 victory over neighbours Kilbrittain in the opening round of the championship at Ballinascarthy.   We dominated the first half leading by 1-5 to 1-0 at the interval but Kilbrittain were more than a match for us after the break.  Charlie Long, Cathal Lynch and David O’Donovan were prominent throughout the first half and involved in most of our scores but were well supported by Gavin Lowney at middle field together with the whole half back line of Cian Burke, Niall Daly and Conor Twomey.  Our all-important goal on the 15th minute came courtesy of David O’Donovan finishing after a storming run out of defence by Cian Burke.  Cathal Lynch and Charlie Long converted a brace of frees each on the 3rd and 11th minutes and the 6th and 22ndminutes.  Kilbrittain scored  a great individual goal on the 23rd minute but we finished the half stronger with a Tony Quinn point from play after a fantastic short free from Cathal Lynch.  Mark Hickey scored some brilliant frees for our opponents in the second period yet we never looked in too much bother after a converted 65 m free from Cathal Lynch on the 38th minutes, two converted frees and a fine long distance point by Charlie Long on 40th ,  47th and 58th minutes and the best score by the industrious Gavin O’Brien on the  59thminute.

Team: Cian O’Donovan, Oisin Doyle, Tim Twohig, Oisin O’Mahony, Cian Burke, Niall Daly, Conor Twomey, Philip Hartnett, Tony Quinn 0-1, Charlie Long (0-5, 4f’s), Gavin O’Brien 0-1, Cathal Lynch 0-2 frees & 1 x 65m, David O’Donovan 1-0, Daithi Collis, Jack Calnan; Sub: Conor Creagh-Piper.

U15

The Bandon under 15’s qualified for the semi-final at the County Football Championship with a comprehensive win over Kinsale last Sunday at Kinsale. Bandon won on a margin of 3-14 to 1-4 and did most of the damage while playing with the wind in the first half. Bandon led a half time by 3-6 to two points but for some poor option taking could have scored another three or four goals.

Thankfully, in the second half when playing against the wind, Bandon tightened up considerably and outscored their opponents by 8 points to 1-2 in the second half. Bandon now go on to meet Clyda Rovers in Mourneabbey next Wednesday night.

Team Oisin O’Doyle, Oisin O’Mahony, Tim Twohig, Brendan Twohig, Cian Burke, Conor Twomey, Tom Desmond, Robert McCarthy, Niall Desmond, Gavin Lowney, Charlie Long, Cathal Lynch, Rory Desmond, Daithi Collis and Jake Lilis. Subs Tom Donovan, Luke Quinlan, Rory Harrington, Conor Gallagher, Joe O’Donovan and David McCarthy.

U12

The Bandon under 12 football team had a great outing to play in a Munster football game in Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney last week. This is a great experience for the Bandon lads and they responded by playing some of the best football they have played all year. Their passing and their movements was excellent and they won all four matches played. In fact, they only conceded 4 points in total in the four matches which showed the quality of the football they produced. Bandon defeated Waterville Legion Milltown/Castlemaine and Killeagh-FP ITAS. The amount of players who played for Bandon were Donnacha McCarthy, Daniel O’Leary, Zac Canniffe, Rory O’Callaghan, Ciaran Twomey, Sean Ahern, Darragh Collins, Conor Payne, Eoin Geary, Hugh O'Mahony, Darragh Power, Ronan Crowley, Liam Twomey, Collum Waugh, Ronan Ahern, Dan Lane, Collum McCarthy, Olin O’Driscoll and Jack Coughlan .

This team are now playing the football league playoff against Barryroe on Monday the 7th and the league finals is expected to be on Monday the 31st.
