Southern Star 19th August - 2017-08-15

The past week has been a disappointing one for the club losing all three championship matches that we competed in and yet we have three more league and championship finals in the coming week in order to redeem ourselves.

U16

There was no shame in losing any of the three matches especially so with our under 16 A hurlers who lost out by only the minimum margin 1-20 to 2-16 after extra time to Ibane Gaels on Wednesday evening in Clonakilty.

JBF

Our Junior B Footballers were well in control of their semi-final against Goleen on Thursday evening at Aughaville until a defensive mix-up five minutes before half-time led to the concession of a goal and this came soon-after the concession of another very good goal by Goleen.   This gave the initiative to the victors and no matter how hard Ronan Crowley and Eoghan O’Donovan tried in the second half we were unable to bridge the gap and eventually lost on a Score of 2-10 to 3-11.

Minor Football

Then on last night Monday 14th  August,  our Minor Footballers bowed out of the West Cork Minor A Football Championship at the Round 1 stage after losing out to Canovee on a 3-7 to 2-15 score-line.  A goal by Gavin O’Connell inside 2 minutes saw us taking the early initiative only for Canovee to draw level by the 10th minute.  Shane Lowney kicked two good points on the 10th and 17th minutes courtesy of fantastic work by Aidan O’Mahony in both moves, Ben Donegan netted soccer-style on the 22nd minute and Conor Calnan completed our first half score of 2-3 to the 0-4 by our opponents.   We were comfortable and could have had more goals scored by the small whistle as we had found it easy to breach their defence when we were inclined to go for it.
Upon the re-start, a goal by Olann McSweeney was dis-allowed for a square ball.  However, for whatever reason our team went to sleep after this and conceded a goal and six points in the next 9 minutes and as it turned out this was the winning and the losing of the game.  Some brilliant Marks by Aidan O’Mahony settled us from our kick-outs and we rallied well and Gavin had his second goal on the 10th minute after a lovely through ball by Shane Lowney and after Olann McSweeney pointed a minute later the scores were level again at 3-4 to 1-10.  The next score however fell to our opponents from the penalty spot and despite our best efforts we were unable to make up the deficit and Canovee ran out deserving winners.

This was a game that got away from us as we were comfortable for most of the first half and a poor re-start contributed to our ultimate downfall.
Team Cian Farrell, Eddie Hetherington, Ciaran McCarthy, Geremy Collins, Harry Lillis, Paul Lang, Fionn Twomey, Aidan O’Mahony 0-1f, Nelson McCarthy, Conor Calnan 0-1, Ben Donegan 1-0, Gavin O’Brien , Gavin O’Connell 2-1, Olann McSweeney 0-2, Shane Lowney 0-3.
