St Brogans GAA Club’s Successful Year
St. Brogans

2005 will long be remembered in St Brogans GAA Club as being extremely successful with two county championships and various other titles won throughout the year.
Pride of place must go to the Under 14 hurlers and footballers who ended the year as double County Champions and could have been All Ireland winners with a little bit of luck. In an extremely punishing schedule in May and June they captured the County, Carrighdhoun and inaugural Carbery / Muskerry Titles as well as competing in the All Ireland Feile. This last competition was staged in Cork over a weekend in June this year with Bandon playing host to Kilmoyley from Kerry, Ballinascreen from Derry and Bishopstown. Bandon qualified for the semi-final after a tough series of games played on Friday evening and Saturday morning.
Throughout the morning roughly 100 players plus mentors and supporters were fed by a group of Bandon Ladies who did such a wonderful job that our hospitality was of a standard to be achieved by other clubs. We are all indebted to these gallant ladies for their efforts.
Having Beaten Eire Og in the semi-final Bandon were unlucky to lose to Sarsfields in a very close final.
Once they were finished with the hurling this bunch of players set their minds to winning the County football title. While they suffered a minor setback when they were eliminated from the Carbery League in controversial circumstances (a boardroom decision) they retained their West Cork title in style making it four in a row. After three heart stopping encounters in the County section they were crowned County Premier Champions for the first time ever. A feature of those performances was that they were behind at halftime in every game but they had the ability and will to win to stage a comeback every time.
While the under 14s were blazing their trails of glory other teams in the Club were quietly going about the business of winning their own titles.
The under 11 hurlers became the Southeast champions for only the second time ever while the under 12 hurlers retained their West Cork crown.
The Under 16 hurlers won the inaugural Carbery / Muskerry League Title while the footballers regained their West Cork League and Championship titles.
The starting point for all this success is undoubtedly the Saturday mornings spent in the Charlie Hurley Park where a group of very dedicated people give freely of their time training and coaching children between the ages of six and ten. There are no titles won or lost at this age group but clearly the work done here has a huge bearing on what happens in later years. Long may the good work continue.

Bandon

Minor Football COUNTY CHAMPIONS
Bandon 4-09
Newmarket 0-04
Bandon minor footballers were deserved winners over Newmarket in the County “A” Championship Final played in Ovens last Sunday. This was a great team effort with each player giving his all from the throw in until the final whistle sounded and a score line of 4-9 to 0-4 was a just reward for their work rate. Bandon opened the scoring with a Brian Crowley point from play in the 6th minute and the same player added a great goal in the 10th minute. Points from play by David Aherne and Darren Murray made it 1-3 to no score when Bandon fullback Mark O Sullivan was harshly dismissed when a yellow card would have justified the petty jersey pulling foul committed. Newmarket pointed the resultant free and then added another from a free 2 minutes later but that was as close as they got as a Darren Crowley goal and a David Aherne free left the half time score 2-4 to 0-2 in Bandon’s favor. Darren Ryan moved to fullback and Eoin O Donovan moved to cornerback from corner forward and a two man full forward line was now in operation. Bandon started the second half in determined fashion and with Ronan McCarthy and James O’Donovan lording midfield the scores had to come and D Crowley from play, a David Kelly goal and a point from play by D Aherne stretched the lead to 3-6 to 0-2 the game was as good as over.
Newmarket pointed from play but Bandon responded with a B Crowley point from play, which was added to by an Aherne free, a B Crowley goal and a point by D Crowley and Newmarket closed the scoring with a pointed free on full time. The Bandon goalkeeper Raymond Brennan and full back line of D Ryan, Tom O Donoghue and Eoin O Donovan did everything asked of them after the sending off of Mark O Sullivan who was a huge loss. The half back line of Gavin O Riordan, James Walsh and David Crowley all had their moments and only one point from play conceded says it all. Subs also played their part and Mark O Leary, Tim Crowley, Colm Johnson, Alan O Leary and Jack Donegan all got some action and Brendan Collins was also available. How many times have we seen games been won by 14 players against 15, great stuff lads and to the coach Denny Aherne and selector Tom O Donoghue whose game plan and shrewd switches played a major part in this success we say thank you for bringing the title to Bandon for the first time since 1996.After a well deserved meal in the Munster Arms Hotel the team paraded through the town led by piper Finbarr Finn and a Garda escort, team captain David Aherne held the cup aloft as the lorry driven by Declan O Donovan and sponsored by Trunwit Transport slowly made its way. Club chairman Colman O Mahony and mayor of Bandon Don mc McCarthy thanked the players, management and sponsors Caulfield Supervalu Bandon. Coach and team captain returned a vote of thanks to all supporters who followed them all year.
Bandon were slow to settle and Glanmire with a whirlwind start had 1-1on the scoreboard and missed as much more before Bandon raised their game and were happy to be level at the short whistle 1-2 apiece thanks to a B Crowley goal and points by D Murray and D Kelly. In a hard tackling second half goals by D Crowley and points G O Riordan, J O Donovan, D Aherne and Crowley again gave Bandon a rather flattering win.

The Club AGM will be held in the pavilion at 7 o’clock on Tuesday 27th December everybody very welcome especially new residents in town.

Bandon

Last weeks activities on the playing field were overshadowed by the untimely deaths of Angela Gabriel (nee Ryan) of Kilpatrick and Peter Crowley of Carhue.

Bandon GAA club will sadly miss Angela as she always gave a helping hand when called upon in the Pavilion and all will miss her good humour, laughter and wit. To Jimmy her husband and family we extend our deepest sympathy at this sad time.

Peter played football with Bandon and rugby with Bandon R FC and was a great friend to everyone who knew him and we sympathise with his wife Bernie and family on their sad loss.

Junior Football League Section 1 Final
Bandon 1-10
St. Colums 0-09
Tadg Mc Carthaigh’s excellent floodlit facilities were the venue for the J.F.league (section 1) final between Bandon and St.Colums on Wed Nov 30th. The game was a hard fought sporting contest with Bandon emerging winners by 1-10 to 0-9.
Bandon started strongly against the wind and rain and thanks to a free from R. Moloney and a point from P Mc McCarthy were 2 points up in 6 mins. Continued dominance from Bandon yielded no further scores and after 11 mins. St. Colums found the target twice in quick succession to level scores. In the 18 min.a great Bandon move ended with Owen Mc Sweeney goaling, followed by a pointed free per P McCarthy and 2 points by Mc Sweeney from play left Bandon leading by 1-5 to 0-2. Colums replied with 2 points and a great D O Donoghue point from near the sideline was cancelled out and the half time score read Bandon 1-6 St Colums 0-5. On the resumption an early point by Mc Sweeney stretched the lead but a strong Colums rally yielded 3 points. Both teams continued to play attacking football in very wet conditions and points from A Johnson, O Donoghue and a free by Moloney offset by a Colums point gave victory to Bandon for the second year in a row over the same opposition. After the game Donal Leahy presented the Ml Godley cup to Bandon captain Pat Prendergast. Next years selectors please note the scoring ability of u21 goalkeeper Owen Mc Sweeney in this league final.
Team; P Prendergast, B Hurley K Doyle T Crowley, K Walsh K Lucey N O Rourke A Johnson T Bambury, R Moloney J O Regan P McCarthy, D O Donoghue R Milner and O Mc Sweeney.

Minor Football County A Semi Final
Bandon 3-08
Glanmire 1-04
Bandon minor footballers qualified for the county “A” final when they beat Glanmire in a hard fought encounter played at Minane Bridge last Sunday on a 3-8 to 1-4 score line.

Bandon meet Newmarket in the final this weekend and will need to up the performance and play for the full sixty minutes plus if a county is to be won. Best of luck to all players and management and check locally re time and venue.

In spite of a strong finish the intermediate hurlers were well beaten by Ballymartle in the league semi final last Sunday morning played in Bandon where the effects of a long lay off from hurling was more than evident.

This Thursday evening December 8th a big Bingo session takes place at 9 o’clock in the pavilion with cash of €3000 to be won.

Bandon

Pride of place this week must go to our underage club St Brogans who won the u14 Premier County Football championship final for the first time when they defeated St Michaels in Riverstick on a score of 3-07 to 3-06. Bandon had 1-02 on the scoreboard before St Michael’s opened their account with a point and the city side went on to lead 1-05 to 1-02 at half time. A great start to the second half saw Bandon add 1-02 to their tally and they went on to dominate most of the half, but when the losers scored a goal in injury time Bandon had just one point to spare. Well done to coach Dan Minihane selectors Dan Crowley, John Hourihan and the St Brogans officers and players on this achievement.

Next Sunday at 2.30 in Minane Bridge (Tracton) Bandon play Glanmire in the county minor football “A” championship semi-final with the winners to meet Newmarket in the final.

The intermediate hurlers are due to play a league q/f against Ballymartle at 12 o’clock in Bandon next Sunday.

We would like to thank Mons. Kevin O Callaghan who celebrated the annual deceased members Mass recently held in the pavilion before a large attendance. The club also appreciates the work done by Noel Mc Namara as organizer and the Ladies who served refreshments in making the Mass an important event in our club calendar.

Congratulations to Padraig Crowley chairman of St Brogans on his new appointment as a Cork minor hurling selector for 2006 and we wish him success in the year ahead.

The club A G M is scheduled to take place on Tuesday night 27th December at 7 o’clock.

Bingo to night Thursday at 9 o’clock as usual with big Bingo to be held on 8th December with a grand total of €3000 in cash on offer.

St. Brogans

Under 14 Premier County Champions
St Brogans 3-07
St Michaels 3-06
One point. That was the difference in the end. But it was enough to give the St Brogans, Bandon Under 14 footballers their first ever Premier County Title in Riverstick last Saturday. The final whistle was greeted with a mixture of joy and relief by the Bandon followers who had watched their team battle to yet another close victory. Once again their never say die spirit matched by no little amount of skill was very much in evidence on the day. And it needed to be because their opponents were the reigning All Ireland Div 2 and County Feile Champions, St Michaels Blackrock.
The game started well for the Bandon lads as right from the throw in they took the fight to their opponents. Conor Hourihan got in early for a goal to settle the nerves and shortly afterwards two points were added by Chris O’ Donoghue and Conor again. That finished the Bandon scoring for the opening half as St Michaels took control around the pitch and scored a goal and five points without reply. As Bandon struggled to stay in the game one player stood head and shoulders above the rest. Corner back, Philip Crowley saved Bandon time and time again with vital interceptions and saving tackles during St Michaels’ period of dominance. The half time whistle brought some welcome relief and gave the team a chance to regroup.
Almost immediately after the restart Conor Hourihan had Bandon back on level terms with a goal and soon after he shot over a point to give his side the lead which they never surrendered. The Bandon backs got to grips with their opponents while Stephen Lynch and Conal Murphy took control of midfield and ensured that the forwards had a plentiful supply of the ball. Michael Minihane chipped in with a couple of points and when Chris O’ Donoghue soloed through to score a great goal Bandon were suddenly six points clear. Bandon got no chance to relax however as St Michaels clawed their way back into the game with a goal to leave just three between the sides with ten minutes left to play. Bandon extended the lead to four points before St Michaels goaled after the ref threw in the ball on the fourteen yard line to leave the minimum between the teams with five minutes to go. The last couple of minutes were spent defending the one point lead before the ref blew the full time whistle. The rest as they say is history. Immediately after the game Tony O’ Mahony, Chairman Bord na nOg Corcaí presented the trophy to the winning captain Conor Hourihan.
Bandon : Stephen Murphy, Peter Murphy, Eoin Sugrue, Philip Crowley, Joe Harrington, Eoin Jackson, Denis Cronin, Stephen Lynch, Conal Murphy, Sean Og Murphy, Michael Minihane, Chris O’ Donoghue, Fionn O’ Leary, Conor Hourihan, Mark Sugrue, Colin Swanton, Eoin O’ Mahony and Shane Hickey

Under 16 County Football Semi Final
St Michaels 3-06
St Brogans 3-07
St Michaels exacted some revenge the following day when they comprehensively beat Bandon in the Under 16 County football semi-final in Crosshaven. Bandon got off to a bright start with two early points before the team was disrupted with an injury to wing back Mark Muir. St Michaels seized control and with some sparkling play scored seven points in a row before Bandon finished the half with a point. Half time score was St Michaels 0 : 7 - St Brogans 0 : 3. St Michaels continued where they left off and once they goaled early the game was effectively over. Bandon to their credit never gave up but they found it impossible to break through the St Michaels rearguard for the goals that would bring them back into the game.
Team: J Donegan, M Minihane, D Ryan, S Crowley, M O’ Leary, A Tobin, M Muir, D Crowley, J McCarthy, R Wilmot, T Barrett, C O’ Mahony, R Payne, R Crowley, J McCarthy. Subs: Kevin O’ Dwyer, C Hourihan, Kyle Dwyer, C Collins and S Hourihan.

U14 Football County Semi Final
Bandon 2-08
Glanmire 3-03
The Bandon under 14 footballers made it through to the county final on Saturday when they overcame Glanmire in the semi final after a dour struggle in Brinny. Bandon were nearly made to pay for early missed chances as they struggled for long periods to come to grips with Glanmire. Having played the better football in the opening half they still found themselves two points down at the interval on a score line of 2 : 2 to 1 : 3. Philip Crowley was Bandon’s goal scorer after about 10 minutes. The introduction of Michael Minihane for the second half was vital as it strengthened Bandon around the middle of the pitch and it allowed Chris O’ Donoghue to move forward where he finished with a score of 1 : 3. With the fullback line under pressure throughout Stephen Murphy made two great saves to keep Bandon in the game. Joe Harrington was outstanding at right wing back while Denis Cronin on the other wing never put a foot wrong. Stephen Lynch battled hard in the middle of the pitch and Philip Crowley proved a real handful at corner forward. Conor Hourihan had a quiet game by his standards but he still scored an inspirational point from a sideline to give Bandon the lead with 10 minutes to go. But the real star of this game was centre forward Conal Murphy who must have covered every blade of grass on the pitch chasing and winning many lost causes. It wasn’t a pretty win but it was enough to put them in the county final where they will meet St Michaels next Saturday. Time and venue to be announced.
Bandon : Stephen Murphy, Colin Swanton, Eoin Sugrue, Peter Murphy, Joe Harrington, Eoin Jackson, Denis Cronin, Chris O’ Donoghue, Stephen Lynch, Sean Og Murphy, Conal Murphy, Mark Sugrue, Philip Crowley, Conor Hourihan, Fionn O’ Leary. Sub used : Michael Minihane

Minor Football County 1/4 Final
Bandon 1-16
Canovee 1-05
Bandon minor footballers advanced to the county “A” semi-final when they overcame Canovee last Sunday afternoon in Carrigadrohid. The venue was decided by a toss of a coin, and the visitors with the aid of a strong wind opened the scoring with two points. Canovee soon equalized before Bandon replied with some well-taken points to lead 0-6 to 0-3 after twenty minutes. The home team leveled matters with a goal, but this only urged Bandon to step up their game and a goal scored by Eoin O’Donovan and points by David Kelly and David Aherne left the score 1-9 to 1-3 at the short whistle. The second half saw a much better performance when playing against the elements and the tactical changes made by the management team of Denis Aherne and Tom O Donoghue paid dividends. Bandon deserved to win with an impressive score of 1-16 to 1-5 for Canovee and now await the winners of Mayfield and Glanmire who meet in the other quarterfinal game.

U21 Hurling County 1/4 Final - Valleys too good
Valley Rovers 0-16
Bandon 1-07
For the third Saturday in as many weeks Bandon u21 hurlers traveled to the well laid out Enniskeane grounds and lost to a much stronger Valley Rovers outfit in the county championship. This was a hard fought game between two sides that know each other well, having played together in schools competition, but was ruined by an over fussy referee who was not consistent when applying the rules. Valleys opened the scoring with two points before Robert Moloney replied with a Bandon point; scores were exchanged with a huge James O’Donovan point and then some Valleys frees and two Donagh Lucey frees left the half time score 0-8 to 0-4 .The second half resumed with an exchange of pointed frees and it was 0-10 to 0-5 when Darren Crowley got to the end of a Jason Hickey free to score a good goal which was followed by a D Lucey point to leave the minimum between the sides. Then disaster struck for Bandon as rather harshly the referee sent full back Conor Sugrue to the line and Rovers tagged on the points in the last fifteen minutes of the game for a deserved win on a score line of 0-16 to 1-7 and we wish them the best of luck as they pursue a county u21 double. As for Bandon, the u21 hurlers and footballers had a great year in winning a West Cork double and the club appreciate the huge effort given from players and selectors over the year and with most of the panel available again next year we can go a step further.
Bandon team; E Duggan, G O Riordan C Sugrue C Moloney, B ODwyer J O Donovan (0-1) D Lehane, C Dullea & J Hickey, D Cronin D Lucey (0-5) R Moloney (0-1), D Crowley (1-0) P Moloney P Murphy. Subs used J Milner B Crowley

U21 Hurling West CorkFinal
Bandon 0-13
Newcestown 0-11
After a long wait, Bandon u21 hurlers emulated the footballers and completed the West Cork “A” grade double when they beat Newcestown in Enniskeane last Saturday afternoon. While the standard of hurling was not as high as in the semi-final, it was a hard fought encounter between two evenly matched teams who contested every ball with vigor. Bandon with the aid of the wind opened the scoring with a Jason Hickey point from play but Newcestown replied with two pointed frees before Donagh Lucey added three points from frees and two from play to leave Bandon ahead 0-6 to 0-2. The first half ended with Newcestown adding two points from frees and D Lucey added one point to leave the half time score 0-7 to 0-4 in favour of Bandon. Playing against the wind Paul Moloney scored a point on the restart but Newcestown responded with a pointed free, points were then exchanged with Darren Crowley free, R Moloney, P Moloney and Lucey scoring for Bandon but Newcestown were now exerting a lot of pressure on the backs and got two more points for their efforts but P Moloney had the final say with a great point from play. This was a good team display but special mention to James O’Donovan who had an outstanding game at center back and Paul Moloney at full forward for his second half performance. Final score Bandon 0-13 Newcestown 0-11, and team captain Diarmuid Cronin was presented with the Teddy Kiely Cup, which was last won by Bandon in 1999. The club wishes to thank selectors Terry Moloney, Dan Crowley and Michael Cronin for the huge amount of work they have put in to this team. Bandon now meet Valley Rovers in the quarter final of the county, which will be played in Cloughduv next Saturday evening.

Bandon 3-17
Kilbrittain 2-07
Bandon and Kilbrittain clashed in the West Cork u21-hurling semi-final played in Enniskeane last Saturday evening with the winners to play Newcestown in the final. This was a repeat of last years final and a result was hard to predict but this time Bandon deserved to win in a hard fought game. Bandon played with the wind in the first half and led at the short whistle 2-10 to 1-2 with some great scores from Donagh Lucey and a goal from Darren Crowley. Kilbrittain scored a goal after the restart but some well-taken points and a good goal scored by D Cronin kept Bandon in front at the final whistle with the score 3-17 to 2-7 and a merited win. Junior Football West Cork Semi Final
Gabriel Rangers 2-06
Bandon 1-07
Last Sunday in sunny Castlehaven our junior footballers gave a very disappointing display when they lost to Gabriel Rangers in the West Cork s/f. From the start Bandon never got to grips with their opponents and failed to make use of the wind advantage but still led by 0-6 to 1-1 at half time and after having a player sent off rather harshly and the full back carried off injured the signs were not good for the second half. A goal and a point scored within three minutes should have ignited Bandon, as they now held a 6 point advantage but instead they tired and Gabriels came more into the game and it was only a matter of when before they led for the first time with a goal five minutes from the finish to win on a score of 2-6 to 1-7. We wish Gabriels the best of luck in the final next weekend. The club appreciate the huge effort put in to training since early Jan by the selectors and the players of this team but it was not their day and with West Cork championships won at u21, u18, u16 & u14 things can only get better.

Bandon minor hurlers defeated Ballinhassig and drew with St. Finbarrs in league games played during the last week. Well done to the u16 footballers and selectors- Colm Aherne & Pat Prendergast in winning the “A” Final against Clonakilty last Saturday evening.

St Brogans

U16 Football West Cork Final
St Brogans 4-06
Clonakilty 0-09
The goal scoring ability of the Bandon under 16 Footballers proved decisive in Newcestown last Saturday evening when they got the better of a game Clonakilty side to capture the West Cork League and Championship titles. On a cold evening Bandon, playing against a stiff breeze, came flying out of the starting blocks as Roy Payne carved open the Clon defence with a goal inside the first two minutes of the game. Four minutes later Bandon doubled their lead when Darren Ryan made the journey from full back to send his penalty into the corner of the net and when David Crowley followed up with a point Bandon were seven points clear and the game only ten minutes old. Clon however were not going to go down without a fight and for the next twenty minutes they were camped in the Bandon half of the field. In that time even though Clon scored eight unanswered points to go in at halftime leading by a single point great credit was due to the Bandon defence for not conceding a single goal when under extreme pressure.
On the restart Bandon took control of the game around the middle of the pitch and even though the first couple of attacks yielded nothing Clon were finding it increasingly difficult to break out of defence. The pressure paid off as Bandon first of all equalised with appoint and then Ronan Crowley showed the poachers instinct as he followed up to goal from close range. Two further points and Bandon firmly in control and when David Crowley burst through from mid field to score Bandon’s fourth goal the game was over as a contest. Bandon scored another two points before Clon got their only score of the second half with one minute to go.
Afterwards the Cup was presented to the Bandon captain, Mark O’ Leary by Bord na nÓg Vice Chairman, Aiden O’ Rourke.
Bandon Team: Kyle O’ Dwyer, Sean Crowley, Darren Ryan, Diarmaid Crowley, Mark O’ Leary, Adam Tobin, Mark Muir, David Crowley, Jason McCarthy (Crossmahon), Cian O’ Mahony, Brendan Collins, Robert Wilmot, Roy Payne, Trevor Barrett, Ronan Crowley. Subs used: Michael Minihane, Cian Collins, Jason McCarthy (Deerpark).

U12 League Final
Clonakilty 4-12
St Brogans 1-05
The Under 12 footballers ended their season in disappointment when they crashed to a heavy defeat by Clonakilty in the League final in Clon on Sunday morning last. Both teams were evenly matched for the first twenty five minutes as they swapped points but then Clon raised the tempo and scored a goal and a point without reply before the break. Just after halftime Clon banged in two more goals to put them firmly in control. For the remainder of the game Bandon tried vainly for goals while continued to pick off the points. In the end Clon ran out easy winners on a score line of 4 : 12 to 1 : 5.

Minor Football West Cork Final
Bandon 2-10
Castlehaven 1-06
Congratulations to the minor footballers who won the West Cork Final for the first time since 1996 when they defeated Castlehaven in Clonakilty last Saturday afternoon . In the first half Bandon were never in trouble and led at half time by 2-7 to 0-4 with a goal from Darren Crowley after good play by Eoin O' Donovan and a Brian Crowley goal when he got to the end of a David Ahern free and some great points from David Kelly, James O' Donovan and Ahern. Bandon started the second half with three points from David Ahern to increase the lead to 2-10 to 0-4 but they began to lose shape and left the Haven in for a goal and two points but for good defending by all six backs, the goalkeeper and especially Tomas O' Donoghue the final score of 2-10 to 1-6 would have been closer. This is a very welcome win following the success of the u21 footballers, and the u14 footballers that beat Skibbereen in the West Cork final on Friday night last. Well done to team coach Denis Ahern and Tom O' Donoghue for the work they both put into this team during the year and is very much appreciated by the club.
Team - R.Brennan D Ryan M O Sullivan T O' Donoghue, G O Riordan C Crowley J Walsh, R McCarthy J O'Donovan, A O' Leary D Ahern D Kelly, D Crowley B Crowley and E O'Donovan. Subs used- D Murray and T Crowley.

Charlie Hurley Park was again the venue for the replay of the Intermediate hurling S/F between Kilbrittain and Arigadeen Rangers and the Carbery Rangers v St Vincents Intermediate football clash. Both games were played in terrible weather conditions with wind and rain making it impossible for players to perform to their best but however both games were very exciting for the followers. Ross were winners by 0-13 to 0-7 in the football while Arigadeen won the hurling on a score of 3-6 to 3-5. Thanks to all club members who turned up to help at both games in the dreadful conditions.

St Brogans

U14 Football West Cork Final
St Brogans 5-14
Skibbereen 0-07
The Bandon under 14 Footballers made it four West Cork titles in a row when they defeated a game Skibbereen side in floodlit Aughaville last Friday evening. Skib made the brighter start and were ahead by two points after ten minutes. The Bandon lads were slow to settle and could have found themselves further behind at this stage if Skib had not wasted some good scoring chances. Then a few quickly taken scores transformed the game as Bandon took control around the middle of the field and mounted attack after attack on the Skib goal. Bandon continued to dominate for the rest of the half and led at the halfway stage by 3 : 8 to 3 points. The second half continued in the same vein as the first and in truth this game was over as a contest long before the final whistle. Afterwards the Cup was presented to the Bandon captain, Conor Hourihan by Bord na nÓg treasurer Noel Coakley.
Team: Stephen Murphy, Peter Murphy, Eoin Sugrue, Colin Swanton , Joe Harrington, Eoin Jackson, Denis Cronin, Chris O’ Donoghue, Stephen Lynch, Sean Og Murphy, Conal Murphy, Mark Sugrue, Fionn O’ Leary, Conor Hourihan, Philip Crowley . Subs: Michael Minihane, Eoin O’ Mahony and Shane Hickey.

U16 Hurling County Semi Final
Sarsfields 1-22
St Brogans 0-07
On Sunday morning the performance of the Under 16 hurlers proved to be a major disappointment as they were well beaten by Sarsfields in the County Semi final in Ballinhassig. As the score line suggests Sars were in total control from start to finish as many of the Bandon players never got going at all. It was a disappointing end for a team which showed so much promise earlier in the season.

U16 Football - The Under 16 West Cork football final versus Clonakilty is due to be played on Saturday evening. No venue had been arranged at the time of writing.

U12 Football - Since the football league resumed at the start of September Bandon have won their three games against Skibbereen, Bantry and Newcestown to qualify for the League Final. There they will come up against their old enemy Clonakilty at a venue and date to be decided.

U11 Football - After being outplayed in the first half of their South East League game by Carrigaline the under 11 footballers staged a marvellous second half fight back to turn an eight point halftime deficit into a win by seven points. The final score was Bandon 3 : 8 Carrigaline 2 : 4

U21 County Semi Final
Nemo Rangers 2-09
Bandon 0-07
On Friday night our U21 footballers lost to Nemo Rangers in the county semi-final. Nemo Rangers opened the scoring with a point but a reply from Jason Hickey cancelled it out before Conor Sugrue kicked a fine score. Eoin McSweeney pulled off a fine save to keep Nemo Rangers at bay after quarter of an hour. Robert Moloney and Donnagh Lucey both scored but Nemo Rangers finished the half the stronger scoring a few points and a goal at the end of the half to leave it 1-04 to 0-04 at the break. Nemo Rangers started the second half as they finished the first by scoring 1-02 without reply and left Bandon with a mountain to climb. Robert Moloney (2) and the impressive Conor Sugrue exchanged points with the Nemo Rangers men but it wasn’t to be. Bandon will be disappointed with the result as they had plenty possession throughout but Nemo Rangers were more economical with their use of the ball as Bandon chalked up the wides.

Intermediate Hurling Championship 1/4 Final
Arigadeen Rangers 5-12
Bandon 1-17
On Saturday night Arigadeen Rangers defeated our intermediate hurlers in a high scoring encounter played in perfect conditions in Barryroe. Bandon were unfortunate to trail by a point at the interval as they were on top for long periods in the first half with Donnagh Lucey (4), Darren O Donoghue (3), Jason Hickey, Kieran Hurley and Darren Crowley all scoring but the concession of two goals meant Arigadeen lead 2-05 to 0-10 after thirty minutes of play. The sides exchanged four points a piece following the restart, Donnagh Lucey (3) and a fine effort by Darren O Donoghue before Arigadeen struck for their third goal at the three quarter mark. Donnagh Lucey replied with a 65 for Bandon but when Arigadeen Rangers got their fourth major it left Bandon with it all to do entering the last five minutes seven points in arrears. James O Donovan saw his free cancelled out by an Arigadeen Rangers effort before the impressive Kieran Doyle scored a point followed by a fine Jason Hickey goal to leave a puck of the ball between the sides entering the last minute but Arigadeen Rangers finished with a flourish to leave it 5-12 to 1-17 after a titanic battle.

St Brogans Feile Diary

As told in last month’s edition Cork hosted the Feile na nGael competition for 2005. This competition is the All Ireland Club Hurling Championship for Under 14s and was held on the 17th, 18th and 19th June. Clubs from all over the country competed for honours over the 3 days and the Bandon team as in the thick of the action.
Bandon played host to the Kilmoyley Club from Kerry for the weekend, which involved providing accommodation for their players and mentors for two nights. This was done by the families of the Bandon players and was greatly appreciated by all concerned. New friendships were made and it was wonderful to see the Kilmoyley contingent travelling to support the Bandon lads as the competition progressed.
On the playing front it was hectic to say the least. The competition started on Friday with a comfortable win over Kilmoyley. That evening all the competing teams and their mentors took part in a parade through the streets of Cork. Then at 10 o clock Saturday morning Bandon played Ballinascreen from Derry in a tough lowscoring game. While Bandon lead by a single point at halftime Ballinascreen equalised shortly after. With the game in the balance and chances being missed on both sides it took a wonderful point by Michael Minihane to hand the initiative to Bandon. With a few minutes left Denis Cronin scored a goal to make the game safe.
One hour later it was back into the fray against Bishopstown and what a thriller this turned out to be. Two good saves by Stephen Murphy in the first half helped Bandon g in four points clear at half time. Bandon were holding firm in defence with superb displays from Stephen Lynch and Eoin Sugrue when they were rocked by a goal from a twenty metre free two minutes into the second half. From there to the finish it was nip and tuck all the way as the game ended in a welter of excitement. Bandon were two points up when Bishopstown were awarded another twenty metre free. As the shot at goal was cleared by the massed defence the final whistle sounded to send Bandon into the semi-final.
Throughout the morning roughly 100 players plus mentors and supporters were fed by a group of Bandon women who did a wonderful job while at the same time keeping one eye on proceedings on the pitch. We are all indebted to these gallant ladies for their efforts.
Saturday evening and it was on to Brinny for the semi-final clash with Eire Og. Cheered on by the huge support Bandon took the lead through young Mark Sugrue shortly after the start. With Joseph Harrington fighting hard in midfield and Stephen Lynch controlling everything from centre back Bandon were in control without ever dominating the game. Indeed the star of this contest was corner forward Mark Sugrue who scored 2 : 4 out of Bandon’s total of 3 : 4. Bandon ran out 7 point winners to qualify for a historic final clash with Sarsfields.
The final took place on Sunday morning in Pairc Uí Caoimh again before a large attendance. While Bandon played with the wind in the first half marking was very tight by both teams and scores were very hard to come by. Bandon opened the scoring with a pair of Mark Sugrue points before Sars hit back with a point of their own. Conal Murphy then hit one over followed by two from Conor Hourihan to leave Bandon four points clear approaching the break. However Sars countered with a pointed free to leave a goal between the teams at half time. Bandon mounted attack after attack at the start of the second half but could not tack on the vital points to make the game safe. Sars finally got the break that they needed when they goaled with 10 minutes remaining to equalise for the first time. Two further points took the game out of Bandon’s grasp in the last few minutes to leave Sars as the Feile Champions.
The Bandon dream had finally come to an end but only at the last hurdle. The abiding memories will be of 3 days of tremendous excitement, of Kerry supporting Bandon, of the great work done by the volunteers and of the marvellous Bandon performances especially those of centre back Stephen Lynch who was outstanding from the start to the finish of a great competition.
