Bandon’s Minor Hurlers were defeated 1-12 to 1-15 by Newcestown in the West Cork Minor B
Hurling final played in Enniskeane on Sunday morning.

This was an entertaining game played in Great Spirit but in truth Newcestown were deserving
winners and had they taken their chances in the first half when their wides went into double
figures, they would probably have won more comfortably.

In the second half however Bandon were much more competitive but were unable to create
enough clear cut scoring chances.

At half-time Newcestown led by 0.05 to 1.05 having been in front by 0.01 to 1.04 at one stage.

Bandon did very well to battle back into the game and dominated for a ten minute period
without getting much reward on the scoreboard.

A lot of Newcestown scores came from Bandon errors when we turned over or gave away
possession too cheaply and that included the vital first half goal when the ball should have been
comfortably cleared.

Bandon could not get enough ball into their full-forward line all through the game to really test
the opposition’s full back line. Newcestown were able to dominate the middle third of the pitch.
Bandon’s problems were mostly down to a combination of poor striking, Newcestown’s
tenacity, and just some poor option taking.

However, there were signs all through that if Bandon could get enough ball into the lively full
forward line it might have been a different game.

Bandon applied great pressure in the final ten minutes but our near neighbours hung on in the
end to win the day.

Best on a disappointing day were goalkeeper Brian O'Connell, Ben Donegan, Ciaran McCarthy
and Conor Calnan, Paul Lang, Aidan O'Mahony and Luke Fleming.

U16 Robert O’ Driscoll was a huge loss to Bandon and we wish him well as he recovers from
his latest unfortunate injury this season.

Well done to team mentors James Milner, Joe Burke, Neilus McCarthy and Kieran Doyle who
did a fine job with this team.

There will be little rest for this team because the Minor Footballers are in semi-final actions
against Western Gaels in Newcestown on this Wednesday at 06:30.

Who will ever forget the 4-9 scored by Mark Sugrue in the very one-sided County Quarter-
Final against Mitchelstown in Caherlag last Saturday evening.

His third goal was something to behold. However, the whole team was tireless in this game as
was the case in the Round 4 clash against Glanworth and James O’Donovan, James Walsh,

Brian Crowley, Alan Johnson all had very good games.  We can now look forward to playing
the winner’s of the other Quarter Finalists Kanturk/Cill na Martyra in the semi-final.

The Under-16 footballers got their premier 2 championship back on track after a 4-16 to 1-22
extra time victory over Fermoy last Wednesday evening and their reward is another meeting
against  Carbery Rangers who defeated us by 32 points only last Monday week.

Lastly, well done to the Under 14 footballers upon their 3-20 to 2-6 victory over Ilen Rovers in
the West Cork Semi-Final last Wednesday evening in Clonakilty
